This is a study on a cheapo 9"x12" canvas board, that I'm doing for a portrait of my daughter, which will be 12'' x16". I used the block in drawing to do a small print and then a charcoal transfer. I'm trying out a different flesh palette than my usual. and so far it seems to be going well. I'm working directly from the model using daylight that seeps in from a partially blocked window that is directly behind my easel. The light is fairly frontal and therefore I really have to conceptualize the various forms and their relation to the light. I'm going to put in a skylight this summer which should give me better lighting. Either way, I'm hooked on daylight painting now and I can't even concieve of using anything else.

"Astronomer" 11"x14" pencil, "Krista" 11"x14" pencil
"Astronomer" is a study for a painting that I decided to take a bit further and turn into a complete work. It's lit with daylight rated flourescent lamps. My approach is the same one that I learned when drawing plaster casts. I paid careful attention to the variety of textures, the fullness of the individual forms, and the overall direction and sweep of the light. It will need a little more work in the background before it's completed. The portrait is a block-in study of my daughter which will eventually be transferred to a canvas. I'm really working hard in the block-in to make sure my perspective, anatomy, and shadow shapes are exactly what I need them to be before I start the painting. One more drawing session should do it.
