"Floater and Diver" Cartoon and Color Study

The drawing is 11"x14" and the color study is 6"x8" oil on panel. I decided to try painting under a natural light setup rather than the daylight simulating bulbs that I usually use. I feel like I've sharpened my color and value sense to the point where I'll be able to handle the subtler variations and tonalities of north light. I'll still paint under artificial light, rainy days, stupid daylight savings time, or insomnia, but I'm going to make a real effort to stay on track with the natural light painting. I'm also hoping to paint a few landscapes this year so maybe theres a connection there.

I started this painting as a concept but I quickly realized that it's formal properties were going to outweigh my initial idea. Sometimes that's how it goes you have to trust your instincts. The color study, 6" x 8" , went pretty smoothly and cemented some of the approaches that I was considering using. Some artists make their color studies look like mini versions of their paintings but I've ben influenced a lot by the writings of Ted Seth Jacobs who recommends keeping them simple and as abstract as possible.
